USK FMIPA Hosts Guest Lecture on Tsunami Numerical Modelling by Tohoku University Expert

The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA) of Universitas Syiah Kuala (USK) hosted an international guest lecture titled “Tsunami Numerical Modelling and Agent-Based Evacuation Simulation: State-of-the-Art and Applications” on 17 June 2026 at the FMIPA Senate Room.

The lecture invited Assoc. Prof. Dr. Erick Mas, Associate Professor at the International Research Institute of Disaster Science (IRIDeS), Tohoku University. Widely recognized for his contributions to tsunami engineering, agent-based evacuation modelling, and remote sensing for disaster damage assessment, Dr. Mas shared the latest developments in tsunami hazard modelling and evacuation simulation with USK lecturers, researchers, and students.

The event was organized as part of USK’s human resource development initiative under the EQUITY (THE Impact Ranking USK 2025–2026) program. Through this initiative, the university continues to strengthen academic excellence by enriching the learning experience, enhancing research capacity, and expanding international academic collaboration.

During the lecture, participants explored recent advances in numerical tsunami modelling, agent-based evacuation simulation, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), and artificial intelligence applications for disaster data analysis. These technologies play an essential role in developing accurate tsunami hazard assessments and effective evacuation strategies.

The discussion was particularly relevant for Aceh, one of Indonesia’s most tsunami-prone regions. More than two decades after the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami, disaster risk reduction remains a key research priority, making the adoption of state-of-the-art modelling approaches increasingly important for improving community resilience.

The guest lecture also served as a platform for academic exchange between USK and Tohoku University, opening opportunities for future research collaboration and knowledge sharing in disaster science.

Through activities such as this, USK continues to strengthen its position as a leading institution in disaster research while supporting the university’s vision of producing globally competitive research with meaningful societal impact.
