A Meaningful Academic Journey at Universitas Syiah Kuala
My experience studying at Universitas Syiah Kuala has been really positive and meaningful. As a student in the International Class Program, Faculty of Law, most of my classes are taught in English, which makes it easier for me to follow the lessons and participate in class. Some lectures are still delivered in Bahasa Indonesia, so the first year felt a bit challenging at times. However, as time went on, I slowly adapted and became more comfortable with the learning environment.
One thing I truly appreciate is how approachable and supportive the lecturers are. They often encourage me to reach out whenever I face difficulties and are always willing to guide me or help me catch up with the course materials. Knowing that support is always available has made my academic journey much less stressful.
Outside the classroom, campus life is lively and full of interesting activities that offer great opportunities to learn and grow, even though language can sometimes be a barrier. Making friends here has also been a wonderful experience. Students are friendly and helpful, and within my first year, I was able to make many friends, not only from my class and faculty, but also from different years and departments.
Living in Banda Aceh has been a very personal and eye-opening experience for me. One of the first things I noticed is how proud people are of their culture and language. I see this in small, everyday moments, sometimes even a Grab driver will casually teach me a few Acehnese words during the ride, which always feels warm and genuine.
People here are also kindly curious. Many ask why I chose to come to Banda Aceh, a city known for its strong Islamic values and the implementation of Islamic law, especially since I am a foreigner and a non-Muslim. Rather than feeling uncomfortable, these conversations often turn into meaningful exchanges where I learn more about Acehnese identity and traditions.
Through these interactions, I have come to appreciate how deeply people care about their culture and how openly they share it. Living in Banda Aceh has helped me become more understanding and respectful of cultural differences, making my time here truly memorable.
One of the most impressive moments for me has been experiencing the natural beauty of Banda Aceh. The beaches are incredibly beautiful, especially during sunset, and the surrounding mountains add a sense of calm and balance to the landscape. In the middle of a busy academic life, these moments offer peace and remind me to slow down and appreciate my surroundings. Among all the places I have been, Banda Aceh stands out as the one that brings me closest to nature and inner calm.
